I wouldn't be too worried. I've dealt with McMurray hatchery for a couple years, and if I want pullets I have ALWAYS had to order four weeks out MINIMUM, and at the length of time I didn't get to choose the breed.

Last time I selected the brown egg layer assortment so I could get the chicks in soon enough (four weeks) to plant under my broody Australorp.

I'm not worried about McMurray , I know they are honerable to the best of their abilities . What I am worried about are hatcheries saying they are sold out till june.Pay NOW and you will get eggs or hatchlings in JUNE ! Chickens are going to be the next Gold and Silver. There is now alot of counter party risk ordering friggen chickens LOL !

Dang--looks like the APMEX top 40 list did back in November. And if you're wondering how those chicks are "made", here's your answer:

Tractor supply chicken ordering is up on their website.

Many different breeds, including Buff, Australorp, RIR, etc.

2.38 each for pullets. 2.08 each for unsorted.

Minimum order, 25.

Wow... I get my pullets for $1.55 - $1.72! Unsorted are $1.20ish. I order from the local co-op, which gets them in from Hoover's Hatchery. They aren't sold out yet, but I am told that it gets tough in April to get chicks. Mine will be here the end of the month. (could get them on this Monday's order, but I need to make a new home for the little ones, and it is not ready yet). Check out http://www.hoovershatchery.com.

Unfortunately, shipping costs would outweigh the price delta for me since we are only buying around 25.

Re: Large chicken hatchery

The shipping cost is not cheap, not to mention its sad when the shippment gets lost "in the mail" for a few days and you open up the box and it looks like Jones town.

Re: Large chicken hatchery

Is there a farm co-op or feed store anywhere near you? They often do weekly or bi-weekly orders that are delivered there. You just tell them what you want and they add it to their order. When they do this, you do not usually pay shipping. That's what we do. I don't need to be worried about being home, either, as I know that the chicks will be in the nice warm building waiting for me to get there to pick them up.

I think it's more a McMurray problem, not a chicken problem.

The best egg layers are available:
Rhode Island Red
Red Star
Buff Orpington

Negative SJ , All hatcheries that I have looked at are getting squeezed in my area.If you have a good hook up on chicks let us know. Tractor supply and John Deere stores in my area are selling out of chicks the first day they get them in stock.

Re: Large chicken hatchery

This thread makes me glad that I bought myself an incubator as a birthday gift this year. So far I have 7 Red Bourbon Turkeys, 50 plus chickens, and 27 bobwhite quail. (There was more than 40 quail, before the cat learned how to open the door and found all those individually packaged Mcquail nuggerts. Bad kitty!)

Plus I have another 50 eggs in the incubator. Come summer, I will have lots of eggs and lots and lots of roosters and hens to sale. :s1:

Of course, since I hate my neighbors, I do daydream about putting 50 crowing roosters in a pen right next to their house. :36_3_12:
